Hey there,
When I started out ‘tings I advertised it as discovering what startups are doing to preserve the future of our planet. But to preserve something, it first has to exist. At the rate we are going there is no future to preserve. It is a harsh truth, but it is the truth. I have been thinking a lot about what ‘tings is at the moment and what it could become, and as I have tried to do in the past, I want ‘tings to be rooted in transparency. Transparency not only in the sense of why I have missed a ‘tings edition, or how much CO2 emissions ‘tings has generated, but also transparency in the sense of talking about the current state of the climate crisis with the urgency it deserves.
Talking about preserving the future of our planet was not really that transparent, it sends the wrong message. We can’t hide behind nice words. We should all know by now, that at the rate we are going we are fucked. Yes, fucked. I think the vulgarity of the word is fitting to the situation. The time to pretend like we can do a little bit here and a little bit there is over, we don’t have the time to do that. I still believe we can, with a collective effort, deal with the climate crisis. We all have to work hard to unfuck our planet together.
It has been 9 months since I released the first ‘tings edition. In that time I have spent hours upon hours researching, published 25,000 words and sent thousands of emails. I have been blown away by the response to these newsletters, met many smart people, and even landed a job as a result of ‘tings, but I think after 9 months of publishing roughly the same format of email every other week the time for change has come.
To really make a dent in unfucking our planet, I want to evolve ‘tings into something that more people can get value from. Not everyone has the time or desire to read 7-minute long emails diving into three startups doing something to ‘preserve the future of our planet’. Even in my inbox, long and in-depth newsletters end up in the unread purgatory. That is why I am re-launching ‘tings today with more transparent messaging and updating the format of the newsletter towards something more people can get value from. The ‘tings newsletter will still hit your inbox every other weekend but will only take 5 minutes at most to read and cover a broader variety of topics. We will of course continue to look at what startups are doing to solve existential problems but also look at what we as individuals can do to reduce our impact and dive into the things that corporations and countries need to change.
If you read my previous newsletter post, about doubling the length of toilet paper, you’ll know the massive impact we can collectively have. My hope is that through ‘tings we can spread the conversation about climate change with enough transparency and explore how we can unfuck our planet together. With that being said, send ‘tings around to as many people as you can, the power of numbers is undeniable, the more people we are the more we can achieve!
I’m looking forward to sending you the first newsletter exploring how we can unfuck our planet.
Until then, much love,
Pascal 🖤

P.p.s. I did not come up with the unfucking the planet phrase, I was inspired by Chris Sacca the Managing Partner of Lowercarbon Capital.
